Summary
Landscape Views
Views contrasting the difference between areas that were and were not burned this summer. When two images are compared, they were taken from opposite sides of the trail.
Oak Response
Images showing oaks that created water sprouts or did not sprout after the summer burn.
Sprouting Shrubs That Were Browsed
Images of willow and chokecherry sprouts that were browsed.
Rare Shrub Protected From Fire
Ceanothus herbaceus that was protected from the summer burn.
Diverse Savanna Vegetation Response
Plants that have grown since the summer fire.
Flower
A flower that is a new species for me.
Landscape Views

Burned this summer on the right, not burned this summer on the left.

View of low area that was burned this summer. Sorghastrum nutans is already getting fall color.

View of low area that was not burned this summer looking in opposite direction.

Oak savanna with many chokecherries top killed and not sprouting after summer fire.

Looking the other direction at oak savanna that was not burned this summer. Shrubs were top killed during an earlier fire but grew back from basal sprouts.

Closer view of chokecherries showing some sprouting and others not sprouting after the summer fire. The area under the chokecherries has grass that looks deeper green than surrounding areas. This could be due to different species growing under the chokecherries. It is also possible that less intense fire under the chokecherries caused less nitrogen to be volatilized resulting in the deeper green color of the vegetation. Higher nitrogen makes plant leaves a deeper green color.

Savanna along Dead River after summer fire.

Savanna along Dead River not burned by summer fire.
Oak Response

Oaks sprouting after being top killed by fire.

Taller oaks with enough branches and leaves remaining unburned that apical dominance was not lost resulting in no basal sprouting.
Sprouting Shrubs That Were Browsed

Willow sprouting-after-fire and browsed by deer.

Chokecherry sprouting-after-fire and browsed by deer.
Rare Shrub Protected From Fire

Rare Ceanothus herbaceus was protected from fire.
Diverse Savanna Vegetation Response

A diverse area of savanna showing plants that have grown since the summer fire.
Flower

A new species for me I will work on identifying.
